In 1977, Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County was formed. That same year, a 13-year-old girl named Susan Smith began answering phone calls for AILC, never knowing she was starting a lifelong journey of service.
As Susan grew, so did her role. She became an EMT and worked the ambulance during a time when the job was truly hands-on: manual stretchers, paper charts, and CPR performed entirely by hand. Along the way, she experienced moments that stay with you forever, like delivering a baby on the side of the road in the back of an ambulance. That baby would be 40 years old today.
Susan later transitioned into the administrative offices, working in billing, then HR and accounts receivable. Her leadership, dedication, and heart for this organization led her to serve for many years as Vice President. In early 2024, she stepped into the role of President—continuing a legacy nearly five decades in the making.
After 48 years of service to the Laurel County community, celebrating her 62nd birthday this past Saturday, navigating health challenges, and feeling the pull to spend more time with her family, Susan has made the decision to begin her retirement effective January 31, 2026.
We are beyond grateful for Susan’s unwavering dedication, leadership, and love for this organization and our community. Her impact will be felt for generations to come. We wish her nothing but joy, rest, and happiness in this next chapter.
